The Healthy4Life 12 days to a healthier Christmas: Day ten

Our ‘Healthy4Life’ programme helps families across North Tyneside and the title speaks for itself – being healthy is a life-long commitment. Being healthy for one day isn’t going to change your life, the same as having the occasional treat won’t ruin all of your hard work!

So, to turn the ‘a dog is for life, not just for Christmas’ phrase on its head, being healthy is for life, and isn’t to be forgotten at Christmas!

As always, we’re here to help! The Healthy4Life team has created a 12 day guide to a more active and healthy Christmas – with lots of festive fun for the family…

Day ten

Rudolph’s recipe – Christmas cookies

Easy to make cookies! Use any shape cookie cutter you have or like, such as a Christmas tree, or use a knife to make them into star shapes!

Ingredients (makes 10 cookies):

  • 100g porridge oats

  • 50g plain flour

  • 100g low fat or 0% yoghurt

  • 1 egg

  • 2 tablespoons of honey (or 30g low sugar sweetener)

  • ½ teaspoon of bicarbonate soda

  • ½ teaspoon of baking powder

  • A pinch of salt

  • A few chocolate chips (optional)

Method:

  • Line a baking tray with grease-proof paper and preheat the oven to 180°

  • Beat the egg in a mixing bowl and add in the yoghurt and honey (or sweetener) and mix together until smooth

  • Blend the oats until they look like flour

  • Add the blended oats and the flour to your egg mixture

  • Add the salt, bicarb soda and baking powder and mix together until smooth

  • If you’re using them, add your chocolate chips

  • Use a large spoon to take a portion of cookie mixture at a time and place and flatten as evenly as you can onto a flat surface

  • Cut out your shape of choice and place the cookie onto the baking tray

  • Make sure any spare mixture from cutting is mixed back with what you have left and repeat until all of the mixture is used up and you have 10 cookies

  • Place the tray in the oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden in colour

  • Remove the cookies from the oven and allow them to cool before you enjoy!
